UX/UI Internship at SiO Digital —
Improving the online experience for clients’ users through a UX lens.
Background
During the summer of 2019, I had the opportunity to intern as a UX/UI Design Intern at SiO Digital, a digital marketing agency that provides web design and marketing services. With a focus on driving site conversions, I worked on a variety of tasks related to web design. I proposed site-wide design changes and new user flows for three clients in the shipping, childcare and health industries.

My WORk
My largest project involved designing for a B2B client in the shipping industry.
*For NDA purposes, images below are blurred. Some major tasks I worked on included:
Analyzing website performance and redesigning user flows.
Interviews and user tests were not within the my role’s scope, thus I drew on Lucky Orange website analytics data (heat maps, click counts, recordings of user interactions) to analyze users’ experience. I also created several personas to identify the most commonly taken flows and their pain points.
Drawing on these analyses, I came up with new user flows to improve the user experience and increase user engagement metrics.
Designing high-fidelity website mock-ups.
My largest project involved designing high-fidelity mock-ups for a client within the shipping industry. Several of my proposed flows and designs are currently live on the client’s site!
For this project, I also conducted a competitive analysis to identify ways in which I could differentiate the client’s services from that of local competitors. Looking back, there are significant changes I would’ve made regarding the color scheme to further improve the visual appeal of the site.
TAKEAWAYS + IMpact
Six of my proposed designs were implemented by the web development team. Knowing that my work had a real-life impact made my internship experience that much more meaningful and only strengthened my passion for UX!
I loved having the opportunity to work with different clients and collaborate with the marketing and development teams. Hearing the perspectives of different teams was extremely insightful, and I look forward to engaging in more cross-departmental collaboration in the future.
Under guidance from the web development team, I was also able to gain some more hands-on experience with front-end work — special thanks to Karan Jain and Bob Painter!
